What is the difference between Mixing and Mastering?

When mixing, the individual tracks/individual instruments of a song are tuned to each other and brought into a sonic relationship.

It's like cooking: there are many individual ingredients that are now put into a pot and from which a tasty dish is then cooked.

Mastering is usually about post-processing an entire mix. Mastering comes after mixing and is the final creative musical process before a song or album is released.

A good mastering engineer can also make a collection of songs feel like an album by tonally matching them all.

You can think of it as a kind of Photoshop for your music. Your song is polished again, made acoustically prettier, and brought up to the right volume.

What is Stem Mastering?

Stem mastering is a technique where the individual instrument groups of your song are mixed together to achieve a cohesive sound.

It's commonly used, especially by less-experienced mixers, because it allows for more access to the audio groups instead of just working with a single stereo track.

Why should I consider stem mastering?

By opting for stem mastering, you have the opportunity to mix the track yourself, giving you more control over the final result. Additionally, it enables me to make precise adjustments to each instrument group, ensuring a better overall sound quality.

I'm just not sure. What now?

I hear you.

Many artists are uncertain about working with someone strange from the Internet.

Maybe it's not yet clear whether we personally fit together and have a common vision.

And that's totally important, because every song is something very personal. You don't want to just throw it at a stranger.

I get that.

So what I like to offer to get to know artists better is a call where we get to know each other, talk about your art or whatever moves you.

I love to meet new independent artists and exchange ideas.

A lot of people have already taken this step and it has turned into great friendships and successes.

So, what is holding you back?

I am here and look forward to hearing from you,

Glen

Are revisions being charged?

I want you to be satisfied with my work, so you get free revisions per song during the mix process.

A mix process is marked "complete" when a song is ready to be handed over to an external mastering engineer, after consultation with the artist.

Revisions are possible up to 30 days after completion of a mix per song; after this time window has expired, an agreement on a new rate will be made.

For this I will provide you with another offer in written form.

Before you submit corrections to the final product, please listen to the song through at least three different speakers at different volumes.

How long can my song be?

As long as it needs to be!

For mixing purposes, any song under 5 minutes counts as one song.

If a song is between 5 and 10 minutes, I would calculate it as 2 songs.

Anything between 10 and 15 minutes long would be 3 songs, and so on.

If a song is very short, I still count it as a single song.

If you have a longer track, just select the appropriate number of songs in the form.

Can I have changes on my song during mixing?

Yes!

If I have started working on a song and you need to make a last-minute change, let me know as soon as possible!

This is very important because I have to restructure the session accordingly as well as re-align the files.

Depending on how many changes there are, I charge a flat rate for this, for small changes, there are no additional costs. More about this as soon as we are in discussion.

What happens after Mixing?

This is where it gets interesting:

The mix is done and we have a clean-sounding final product we can be proud of.

Since I don't offer a mastering service, I'm happy to get quotes from mastering engineers so we can put the finishing touches on the songs. They also take care of level matching and making sure the tracks sound their best on all platforms.

What about promotion? Nowadays it's not enough to have an album on Spotify, because fans want to get a glimpse behind the scenes of an artist. I have a lot of contact with videographers who specialize in music videos and would love to introduce you to them.

The prices are not in proportion to what I earn from the music...

... and that is completely normal, especially in the beginning.

As an audio service provider, I can't base my prices on the artist's ROI (return of investment). That's not how pricing works either.

With a professional mix, you invest in a sonically clean and exciting sounding production that can help you to convince fans of you and your music.

That's hard to do if the music doesn't sound like it's at its fullest potential.
